A CASUAL MARYLAND LOTTERY PLAYER from the upper Eastern Shore who hit for $100,000 on a scratch-off knows where every cent of the prize money is going.
“I have a daughter in college and another one on her heels,” he said.
The Caroline County resident plays when the mood strikes him. The happy dad has picked up the occasional prize of a few dollars but noted those prizes were “nothing like this.”
While his wife doesn’t play Lottery games, the winner said he “likes to play every once in a while. It’s a joy doing it.”
He won big playing the $100,000 Ca$h game, which is a $30 ticket that went on sale in September 2023 with 65 top prizes at the $100,000 level.
The winner bought the hot instant ticket at Denton Liquors, which is located at 38 Denton Plaza in Denton. The Caroline County retailer is also a winner, receiving a bonus of $1,000 from the Lottery for selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off. Lottery Regional Manager Mary Newman delivered a celebration banner to the store owned by Jay and Kavita Korat so they can display it to alert customers and passersby about this store’s lucky status.
Offering players a choice of 34 scratch-off facings, Denton Liquors also sells the Lottery’s oversize games. Scratch-off sales are 55% of their total Lottery sales on average, Newman said. “We love their enthusiasm with point of sale materials in their location. They wanted the banner placed right in the front and center area of their window!”
The $100,000 Ca$h scratch-off was the largest prize-winning game the store has ever sold. Pick 4 players have also scored three $5,000 prizes in 2024, two in 2023 and three in 2022. Also last year, the store sold a $30,000 top-prize winning Red Hot Cash scratch-off.
Lottery sales are steady at this site. In Fiscal Year 2023, Denton Liquors surpassed its Lottery sales goal by 164.21%, with impressive quarterly achievements. The store exceeded its goals by 117.53% in the first quarter, 183.27% in the second quarter, 189.55% in the third quarter and 175.48% in the fourth quarter.
