FOR YEARS, HIS WIFE TOLD HIM that he was throwing his money away by playing the Lottery, but that all changed when the husband won $50,000 on a Powerball ticket!

The Elkridge couple came to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize, and the wife told Lottery officials, “He’s not as excited about his money as I am.” Which isn’t to say the winner, who is going by the nickname “Instructor” to tell his winning tale, is not excited. He’s just not as vocal about it as his wife.

“Instructor” plays the Lottery about five times per month and sticks exclusively with the multistate jackpot games Powerball and Mega Millions. Meanwhile, his wife explained that although she never plays, her dad was a Lottery enthusiast. She added, “I’m really tickled” about her husband’s lucky win and said her dad would be similarly pleased were he around to share the experience with them.

Asked if he had any plans for the money, the winner replied, “Not yet.” “Save for retirement,” his wife offered, adding, “I want to go to Greece!”

Typically, when he plays a Lottery jackpot game, “Instructor” waits a week or more before checking his tickets. In this case, he checked the tickets the next day at his usual place of purchase, Lyndwood Exxon at 6070 Marshalee Drive in Elkridge.

“It was a pleasant surprise,” he said. “Better than the usual, ‘Sorry, not a winner’ message.’”

Both agreed they would keep their win a secret and hadn’t revealed the news to anyone.

Although the Lottery retailer didn’t earn a bonus from the sale of the lucky Powerball ticket, the store did get a promotional banner delivered by Lottery District Sales Manager Aaron Johnson. Lyndwood Exxon staff hung the banner in the front window to alert passersby of its status as a lucky Lottery location.

Lyndwood Exxon offers players a choice of 21 scratch-off facings and has sold other five-figure winning tickets. In 2023, it sold a $10,000-winning Keno ticket and, in 2022, a $10,000-winning scratch-off.

Lottery sales are strong this fiscal year, with the business surpassing its revenue goals by 160.74% in the first quarter and 109.49% in the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2024. Lottery sales are on pace to exceed the store’s fiscal year goal by 124.48%

CONGRATULATIONS AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
