A Maryland Lottery player from Garrett County was happy when she scratched her Power Cash instant ticket and thought she won $5,000. Then, she double-checked and realized it was worth a lot more than that — 10 times more, to be exact.

“I didn’t know about the multiplier,” the winner said when she and her husband trekked to Baltimore to claim the prize. “I took off  work for two days guarding the ticket!”

The scratch-off fan was the first $50,000 winner on the $5 ticket, which hit stores in February.

It all started when she and her husband were driving home from work and stopped for gas at BFS Foods #46 at 24179 Garrett Highway in McHenry, along Deep Creek Lake. The Western Maryland resident went in and purchased some scratch-offs, including the winning game, and played them on the spot.

Power Cash scratch-off While she was still in the store, the loyal player thought she had a winner for $5,000. But when she went outside and scanned the instant ticket with the Maryland Lottery app on her phone, she saw the extra zero.

“It’s my first time winning this big,” she said, explaining that she has won prizes of a few hundred dollars from time to time in the past.

The winner and her husband have two young children and plenty of expenses. She reports having practical plans for the money, starting with getting professional investment advice that may help lead to the purchase of a house. The couple also is planning a low-key celebration in the near future.

For selling a top-prize winning scratch-off, the BFS Foods location received a bonus of $500 from the Lottery and a promotional banner delivered by Lottery District Sales Manager Joey Thorne. The Garrett County business offers players a selection of 24 scratch-offs sold through a Lottery vending machine.

In addition to the $50,000 winning scratch-off sold this year, BFS Foods #46 sold a $50,000-winning scratch-off in 2016 and a $10,000-winning instant ticket in 2013.

Its Lottery sales in the first and third quarter of Fiscal Year 2024 were also strong, exceeding the store’s goals by 108.33% and 106.08%, respectively. Best of all, sales are on pace for BFS Foods #46 to exceed its fiscal year goal by 104.03%.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
